Ka Jandy, an epitome of a woman revolutionary fighting for justice and social liberation

The Makabayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (MAKIBAKA)-Negros pays tribute to Emarie “Ka Jandy” Pastidio who gave her life for the struggle for justice and social liberation. Her life as a woman revolutionary gives inspiration to us all and nurtures our determination to carry forward the people’s democratic revolution. Ka Jandy was martyred, together with Joshua ‘Ka Jorge’ Sultan, while facing enemy troops in Sitio Mansulao, Barangay Pinapugasan, Escalante City, Negros Occidental on February 21, 2024.

MAKIBAKA-Negros grieves with the families and friends of Ka Jandy and Ka Jorge, most of all, Ka Peeta, Ka Jandy’s husband and comrade-in-arms, and Baby Marx Cairo, her son, and the revolutionary forces and masses of Northern Negros.

We demand justice, as well, for Tatay Jose Caramihan, an ordinary farmer who was planting rice during the armed encounter. He suffered the brutality of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army (79IBPA) when he was butchered and presented afterwards by the military as a casualty of the New People’s Army (NPA), along with Ka Jandy and Ka Jorge.

Revolutionary women in Negros would like to highlight Ka Jandy’s life that was full of struggles for a young woman. She did not just suffer under a fascist patriarchal system, but up to her death, she is being exploited by the Philippine Army for monetary rewards, promotion and empty accolades. 

Ka Jandy was captured twice and experienced all sorts of torture at the hands of the fascist military.

In 2018, Ka Jandy was organizing a cultural group in the hinterlands of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental when 79th IB soldiers raided the house where she was resting in with her fellow organizer. Both of them were dragged out and made to drop face down on an anthill before bringing them to the 79th IBPA Headquarters, where they experienced more mental torture during interrogation. Both Ka Jandy and her companion were eventually freed after public pressure.

Her experience under illegal detention and torture by the reactionary state was the turning point for Ka Jandy. From a cultural youth group organizer, she became a young woman fighter of the NPA. As a Red fighter, she contributed much and more to the armed struggle to the best of her abilities. Her comrades in the NPA unit she belonged to acknowledged her great contribution in guerrilla zone expansion work.

On January 13, 2021, in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, while Ka Jandy was on maternity leave, she again suffered at the hands of the 79th IB for a second time. She evaded a raid by armed soldiers of the 79th IB on the house where she was recovering and taking care of 2-month old Baby Marx Cairo Salino, but she was eventually captured. She experienced torture, specifically cigarette burns all over her body, and was repeatedly raped by 79th IB soldiers. For days, she was fighting for her life, determined to see her baby again.

On the 10th day of her incarceration, Ka Jandy was able to escape the enemy camp and was rescued by her comrades. However, Baby Marx, whom she left with a family for his welfare, was reported as a ‘recovery’ by the raiding enemy troops and remains a hostage of the Philippine government to lure his parents into capitulation.

Until now, after three years, despite numerous efforts, Baby Marx’ grandparents strive to bring him home but they are facing bureaucratic hindrances put in place by the reactionary government’s NTF-Elcac. They are also being targeted by fascist reactionary state forces to pressure their son, Baby Marx’s father, to surrender. Ultimately, Ka Jandy died without seeing her baby boy again.

Even after her death, the fascist Philippine Army is maligning Ka Jandy’s life and legacy in their black propaganda. They spread lies and intrigues to tarnish the memory of Ka Jandy and the revolution she stood for. Yet, they will of course fail.

On International Women’s Day this March 8, let Ka Jandy’s story of a revolutionary woman and mother advancing the liberation of women in this macho society and struggling to end of all forms of abuse generated by the ruling system, spur a new wave of women to participate in the revolutionary armed movement.
The MAKIBAKA-Negros also continues to demand the immediate and safe return of Baby Marx to his family. We vehemently condemn the reactionary state for violating international humanitarian law, specifically the special protection for infants, children, and pregnant women.

We call on peace and human rights advocates all over the world, as well as women’s organizations, to support the campaign for Baby Marx Cairo Salino’s release to his family. The Marcos Jr regime must be made accountable for the war crime of keeping Baby Marx and, other infants and children in similar circumstances, hostage.

Reactionary state unconcerned over rights and welfare of Negrosanon children

As an organization of women revolutionaries, the Makabayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (MAKIBAKA)-Negros utterly condemns the cold-blooded massacre of the Fausto family by the 94th Infantry Battalion (IB) last June 14 at Sitio Kangkiling, Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, especially the merciless killing of two children who were 11 and 15 years of age.

Focused military operations and the Retooled Community Support Program (RCSP) in the countryside has brought trepidation for people’s lives and security, particularly for children. While state forces carelessly shower bullets and bombs on peasant communities, ransack houses, illegally arrest innocents, coerce civilians to surrender, and abduct and murder ordinary folk and hors de combat, fear, anxiety, sorrow and anger are instilled in the minds and hearts of the people and their children. Trauma develops among children upon witnessing the lives of their father, mother, siblings and relatives taken away. In every destroyed home and each family victimized by state fascism, one to a thousand children are deprived of freedom to live as well.

The murder of brothers Ben and Raben Fausto is not the first incident where the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), currently headed by MGen. Marion Sison, violated children’s rights.

The case of Aldren Faburada, 17 years old, who was severely beaten and killed by the 62nd IB and was then tagged as an NPA member when he was only fetching his school module from their hut near the encounter site at Sitio Kansampo, Brgy. Bagtik, La Libertad, Negros Oriental last March 15, 2021 cannot be forgotten. The massacre of Everly Kee Jacolbe, 16 years old, her pregnant mother and her relative by the 62nd IB at Sitio Banderahan, Brgy. Trinidad, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental on July 26, 2022 was also strongly condemned by the people.

It can still be recalled that the 94th IB physically assaulted locals of Sitio Cunalom, Brgy. Carabalan, Himamaylan City, Pedro Montecino and his son Christopher, 17 years old, on September 11, 2021 and tagged Christopher in front of the media as an NPA “child warrior” who surrendered named “Ka RR.”

In 2022, National Democratic Front (NDF)-Negros monitored 17 cases of human rights violations by military troops on the island, mainly the 62nd IB and 94th IB, directly involving children. These were cases of extrajudicial killing, harassment and threat, indiscriminate firing and bombing, attempted abduction, forced surrender, and illegal detention.

Military troops occupying schools also cause intense fear as children and their teachers function as human shield for chicken-hearted soldiers. It disturbs the children’s education and places the community in danger.

Cases of 3rd ID troops targeting and attacking babies and children they suspect as sons and daughters of Red fighters happened one after another. This division of the Philippine Army is notorious for employing similar dirty tactics in warfare wherein children are used as bait to force the surrender and capture of their parents or relatives.

One well-known case was the 79th IB’s kidnapping of Baby Marx Cairo Salino, a two month old infant of NPA fighters, who was taken from his caretaker on January 13, 2021. The baby, currently with the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) of Escalante City, Negros Occidental, is considered a hostage of the 79th IB. Despite the rights of Baby Marx’s family to claim and care for him, the fascist and merciless personages of the CSWD and military stubbornly insist that the freedom of Baby Marx depends on their decision.

Other brazen cases of violations were the 94th IB chasing after and attempting to abduct four children aged one to two years old in different barangays of Himamaylan City last 2022. Meanwhile, just this year, on May 14 at Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, the 11th IB captured a mother with her one-month old baby and her husband; they were suspected as NPA members.

MAKIBAKA-Negros is concerned as well with reports that the 11th IB placed a P50,000 bounty on a two year old child of a Red fighter couple under the NPA’s Rachelle Mae Palang Command in Southeast Negros to use as hostage to coerce the parents to surrender.

Through the National Task Force (NTF)-Elcac, the Philippine National Police (PNP), local government units, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and DSWD have become accomplices of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in its scheme to attain the twisted fantasy of the US-Marcos II regime to frustrate the armed struggle of the people.

The AFP boasted of the implementation of deceptive peace and development programs and projects in communities such as the RCSP and Barangay Development Program which allegedly aim to build and protect a community affected by armed conflict, but actually these were used to draw a veil over rampant military operations and the spread of state terrorism in the area.

With the massacre of the Fausto family including their two children, clearly the reactionary state is unconcerned over protecting and providing the welfare of Negrosanon children. It is not conscientious in solving the roots of armed conflict because it implements militarist measures to suppress the toiling masses.

The MAKIBAKA-Negros welcomes the announcement of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) that it will hold an investigation. All who uphold human rights are also urged to launch an independent investigation directly in the community of the Faustos and other areas where there are increasing cases of human rights violations.

However, the bigger challenge is concrete action after the investigation to hold the culprits accountable. It has been forever since the reactionary government was able to give justice to the lengthy list of human rights violations especially against children on Negros Island perpetrated by the fascist AFP, PNP, NTF-Elcac and other government agencies.

There should be measures on how to defend and give sufficient protection to children, may they be of Red fighters or civilians. With their young disposition, the two governments in the Philippines, the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the People’s Democratic Government based in the countryside, have the responsibility to provide a bright future to children who are the hope of the nation. Children must be steered away from the danger of war and be given safe domicile and environment.

The MAKIBAKA-Negros also calls the entire democratic and patriotic force in society to defend and carry forward children’s rights as stated on the NDFP’s Declaration and Program of Action for the Rights, Protection and Welfare of Children.

The MAKIBAKA-Negros together with revolutionary mass organizations of workers, peasants, youth and other sectors of society is fearless in resisting state terrorism and its resolve to launch revolutionary armed struggle to give children and the coming generation a future of freedom and justice becomes ever more unyielding.###

Madumduman pa ang pagkastigo sang 94th IB kay Pedro Montecino kag sa iya bata nga si Christopher, 17 anyos, mga taga-Sityo Cunalom, Brgy. Carabalan, Himamaylan City sadtong Setyembre 11, 2021 kag pagpasibangud kay Christopher atubang sa media bilang si “Ka RR” nga nagsurender nga “child warrior” sang NPA.

Sadtong 2022, nakatala ang National Democratic Front (NDF)-Negros sang 17 ka kaso sang pag-abuso sang mga tropa militar sa isla, ilabi na sang 62nd IB kag 94th IB, sa tawhanon nga kinamatarung nga direktang naglakip sang mga kabataan. Ang mga ini kaso sang pagpatay, harassment kag pagpamahug, patarasak nga pagpalupok kag pagpamomba, attempted abduction, pilit nga pagpasurender, kag iligal nga detensyon.

Nakatuga man sang grabe nga kahadlok ang pagtenir sang mga tropa militar sa mga eskwelahan diin ginhimo nga human shield sang mga talawan nga suldado ang kabataan kag ila mga manunudlo. Nakatublag ini sa pag-eskwela sang mga kabataan kag nagbutang sa komunidad sa peligro.

Asud-asod ang mga kaso sang pagpangtarget kag pagpang-atake sang mga tropa sang 3rd ID sa mga lapsag kag kabataan nga ila ginsuspetsahan bilang bata sang Pulang hangaway. Notoryus ang ini nga dibisyon sang Philippine Army sa paggamit sang kasubong kahigko nga taktika sa inaway agud gamiton nga paon sa pagpasungka kag pagdakop sa mga ginikanan ukon himata sang mga ini.

Sa pihak sang kinamatarung sang mga himata ni Baby Marx sa pagkuha kag pag-atipan sa iya, nagapakatig-a ang mga pasista kag wala kaluoy nga personalidad sang CSWD kag militar nga sandig gihapon sa ila ang desisyon sang kahilwayan ni Baby Marx.

Kabahin man sa matingkad nga kaso sang kalapasan ang paglagas kag pilit nga pagkuha sang 94th IB sa apat ka mga kabataan nga nagapang-edaron sang isa tubtob duha ka tuig sa nagkalain-lain nga mga barangay sa syudad sang Himamaylan City sadtong tuig 2022. Samtang, sini lang nga tuig, may isa man ka kaso sang pagdakop sang 11th IB sa bag-o bata nga iloy upod ang iya isa ka bulan nga lapsag kag iya nga bana nga ginpasibangdan nga NPA sadtong Mayo 14 didto sa Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental.

Ginakahangawa man sang MAKIBAKA-Negros ang nakuha nga report nga ang duha ka tuig nga bata sang mag-asawa nga Pulang hangaway sa idalum sang Rachelle Mae Palang Command sang NPA sa Southeast Negros ang ginbutangan sang padya nga P50,000 sang 11th IB agud himuon nga hostage para mapilitan ang ginikanan nga magsungka.

Sa natabo nga pagmasaker sa pamilya Fausto lakip na ang duha ka kabataan, maathag nga wala nagaulikid ang reaksyunaryo nga estado sa pagpangapin kag paghatag sa kaayuhan sang kabataang Negrosanon. Indi ini tampad sa pagsolbar sang mga ugat sang armado nga konplikto tungod sa gina-usoy sini nga militarista nga tikang agud pahipuson ang nagahimakas nga masa.

Ginaabi-abi sang MAKIBAKA-Negros ang gin-anunsyo nga imbestigasyon sang Commission on Human Rights (CHR). Ginapanawagan man sa tanan nga nagatib-ong sang tawhanon nga kinamatarung nga maglunsar sang independyente nga imbestigasyon didto mismo sa komunidad sang mga Fausto kag sa iban pa nga lugar nga may ara madamu nga kaso sang paglapas sang tawhanon nga kinamatarung.

Apang ang mas daku nga hangkat amo ang kongkreto nga aksyon matapos ang imbestigasyon agud yara manabat sa ini nga mga kahimoan. Madugay na nga wala gid nahatagan hustisya sang reaksyonaryo nga gobyerno ang malawig nga listahan sang paglapas sa tawhanon nga kinamatarung sa isla sang Negros, ilabi na sang kabataan, nga hinimoan sang pasista nga AFP, PNP, NTF-Elcac kag iban pa nga ahensya sang gubyerno.

Dapat nga himuan sang tikang paano pangapinan kag hatagan sang nagaka-igo nga proteksyon ang kabataan, bata man sila sang Pulang hangaway ukon sibilyan. Sa lamharon nila nga buot, may katungdanan ang duha ka gobyerno sa Pilipinas, ang Gobyerno sa Republika sa Pilipinas kag ang Demokratikong Gobyerno sa Pumuluyo nga nakabase sa kaumhan, paano mahatagan sang masanag nga buwas-damlag ang mga kabataan nga amo ang paglaum sang aton nga pungsod. Dapat ilikaw ang kabataan sa katalagman sang gyera kag hatagan sila sang luwas nga panimalay kag palibot.

Ginabuyok man sang MAKIBAKA-Negros ang tanan nga demokratiko kag patriyotiko nga pwersa sa katilingban sa pagpangapin kag pagsulong sa kinamatarung sang mga bata nga napasad sa Deklarasyon kag Programa sang Paghikot para sa Kinamatarung, Proteksyon kag Kaayuhan sang Kabataan sang NDFP.

Ang MAKIBAKA-Negros upod ang mga rebolusyonaryong organisasyon masa sang mga mamumugon, pesante, pamatan-on kag iban pa nga sektor sang katilingban wala kahadlok sa pagbato sa terorismo sang estado kag mas nangin malig-on ang amon panindugan sa paglunsar sang rebolusyonaryo nga armadong paghimakas agud mahatag sa kabataan kag sa masunod pa nga henerasyon ang palaabuton nga may ara kahilwayan kag hustisya.###

Tuman nga ginadayaw kag ginakalipay sang mga rebolusyonaryong kababaihan ang ika-singkwenta nga anibersaryo sang National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). Pamatuod ini sa pagka-mabinatuon, indi malutos, kag labi nga pagbakud sang rebolusyonaryong hanay. Subongman, mas pa nga nagabaskog ang hanay sang MAKIBAKA ukon Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan, ang rebolusyonaryong organisasyon sang kababaihang Pilipino.

Indi mapanginwala ang mapuslanon nga papel sang NDFP sa sulod sang pungsodnon demokratiko nga kahublagan nga nagtinguha sa pagbag-o sa sosyedad nga malapyudal kag malakonyal nga gintuga sang imperyalismo, burukrata kapitalismo kag pyudalismo. Base sini, ginakondena sang MAKIBAKA ang ginhiwat nga Balikatan Exercises nga nagpasulod sang 15,000 ka Amerikanong tropa sa pungsod. Isa ini ka pagtraydor sang rehimen Marcos Jr sa pungsodnon nga soberanya kag nagbutang sa masang Pilipino, ilabi na sa kakabaihan, sa peligro.
